Chapter 8: Sherrie

No amount of woman’s intuition could prepare me for what was about to happen next. When the limo stopped, Jason’s driver exited the car and held open the door and we stepped out to a carpeted sidewalk where a doorman rushed to open the door. He was dressed in one of those red, gold, and black uniforms with a hat and a gold fringes.

“Don’t worry. I’m with you,” Jason says holding my trembling hand.

“Good evening, Mr. Richfield.”

“How’s the family?” Jason responded.

“They’re doing well...” He was just about to engage Jason in a conversation and pull out the family pictures, but it became apparent that with Jason it was only small talk, and he kept walking and holding my hand tight.

We strutted into what appeared to be a private restaurant located in a private club where the waiters knew him because he had given them the biggest tips of their lives.

When you’re a waiter you remember the heavy hitters. The ones who for no apparent reason leave you more than fifty percent of what the bill is and you try to make them happy and comfortable.

Finally, getting my footing and feeling more relaxed, I did notice heads turning.

Jason led me to a seat looking out into the Manhattan skyline. “Is this okay?”

“That’s wonderful.” Any place in this opulent restaurant would be beyond anything I expected. Jason pulled out my chair and the waiter pulled out his chair. “Can I get you anything now Mr. Richfield?”

“Champaign. You know what I drink.” He bowed and hurried away. I tried to look around and it appears all eyes were focused on me and Jason.

“Why Champaign?”

“Because we are celebrating your entrance into my world. And because you are going on your own and will be living on your own. What better reason to drink Champaign.”

“And what is your stake in this?” I ask skeptical. He appears surprised at me.

“I want you.”

“For what?”

“What does a man want with a woman?”

“That is a loaded question.” I raise an eyebrow. “He could want any number of things some good and some not so good.”

“What would you say if I asked you to marry me?”

“You want to do what?”

“Marry you,” he says. His eyes persuasive with purpose.

“For what?”

“Because I’m attracted to you. Because you are the first woman that refused me and didn’t want to have sex with me.” He smiles and continued listing all the reasons with some being good and a few being not so good. What does a man want to marry a woman just because she tells him no?

During his listing of how many ways Jason wanted me, I hadn’t noticed that the waiter had opened the Champaign and poured he and I a glass. Until he raised it and said, “Let’s celebrate. To the two us. May we have everything we desire. I know I’ve found everything I’ve ever wanted.”

His green eyes sparkle and somehow I believe him or I want to believe him.

As I raise my glass to my mouth I see Lucas and a young woman being led to the table behind us.
